Overcoming Barriers to the Use of Indigenous Practices

Current models of treatment used in mental health treatment have generally emerged from medical and psychiatric traditions. Holistic and indigenous practices are buried away from the public by politics, traditions and myths about the art and science of mental health treatment. Although dozens of successful treatment practices exist to address the most difficult psycho-social-relational problems in our society, many barriers prevent public access to these creative forms of treatment.

Research evidence in medicine and social science shows that nearly every ailment known to mankind can be helped through activating positive relationships. People live longer when they have quality social support. It is this quality social support that is a matter of life and death.
